It looks like Sony may be trying to add more buttons to your PS5 DualSense controller with the help of a back button accessory.
A new patent filing that was spotted earlier today shows that Sony is attempting to patent a back button attachment accessory like the one it made for the DualShock 4 controller, which suggests that it wants to make this accessory for the PS5 controller too.
Sony has not yet confirmed any such plans. But that seems like the most likely scenario given that Sony filed this patent in June of 2020. Some six months after the DualShock 4 attachment was already available.
A back button accessory for the PS5 controller is not guaranteed
Though some players may be eager for Sony to release a back button attachment for the DualSense controller, no such accessory is guaranteed.
Sony has been fairly tightlipped about any new accessories coming for the PS5. At least beyond the ones it made available alongside the launch of the console. Also worth noting is that Sony trying to secure the patent may be tied to the already available model.
As Sony could just be trying to protect against third-party companies making a similar accessory for the controller. The drawing included in the patent filing also shows the design of a controller that is very clearly the DualShock 4. And not the DualSense.
This doesn’t mean Sony isn’t just using an old diagram. But it does mean there’s a good possibility Sony has no intention of recreating the back button attachment for the DualSense.
Is this something players want?
The other thing to consider for both Sony and for consumers, is whether or not players actually want an accessory like this for the PS5.
Although the DualShock version of the back button attachment came out at the very end of the PS4’s life cycle, people still found it useful. How useful is the question. One that Sony may or may not be asking.
Either way, if Sony does plan to release this for the DualSense, it may very well stay the same price. Which would mean you could expect to pay $30 for it. Since this is just a patent filing it’s very possible Sony hasn’t began production. If it plans to in the first place.
Basically, don’t expect an accessory like this to drop for the new controller any time soon. As it would surely take plenty of time to develop.
