The PS5 DualSense controller is a marvel in many ways but that doesn’t make it immune to problems, like drift for instance.
For months it seems players have been reporting complaints about drift on the PS5 DualSense controller via the joysticks. Some videos shared to the PS5 subreddit show the drift in action. And this looks to have been going on since the console released back in November of 2020.
Now that it’s been a few months since the PS5 launched, there are quite a few more consumers having this problem. And likely more that haven’t noticed the issue even if they do have a controller with this problem.
Sony may face a class action lawsuit over the PS5 DualSense controller drift
Nothing is set in stone just yet, but Sony may have an issue on its hands in the near future.
A US law firm, named Chimicles Schwartz Kriner & Donaldson-Smith LLP, says it’s investigating Sony over the possibility of a class action lawsuit. Right now things are merely in an information gathering phase.
According to the firm, it’s requesting players share information about their claims of controller drift. And it’s very likely that if it gets enough of the information it needs, it’ll bring a class action lawsuit against Sony for the controller problems.
Nintendo has been facing multiple lawsuits over this exact same issue. Players had experienced significant and noticeable drift on the Joy-Con controllers for the Nintendo Switch. Causing the joy sticks to move characters or other elements in-game without players touching the joy stick.
If enough players are having the same problems with their PS5 controllers, Sony stands a good chance of being sued too.
Sony has seemingly not yet acknowledged the issue
Sony doesn’t appear to have acknowledged the drift issue yet. And at the time being there is no known fix for the problem. Short of buying another controller and hoping it doesn’t have the same issue.
There’s also a chance that the class action lawsuit may not be brought against Sony by this particular firm. However, there’s no stopping any other firms from bringing a suit.
If you’re having the issues with drift on your own controller, you won’t necessarily have to buy a new one. You could also contact Sony’s PlayStation support team. This could very well lead to Sony providing a replacement free of charge. But know that any support issues may take a while to reach a resolution.
Which means you may end up having to deal with the drift for a while. That is unless you choose to buy a replacement in the interim that hopefully is free and clear of any defects.
