Microsoft just announced a new feature for its Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S consoles called FPS Boost. This aims to increase your frame rates in games so that you get a smoother experience that looks more seamless.
The Xbox Series X already supports 60 FPS for many games. And will eventually support 120 FPS in games once they start arriving. In fact, FPS Boost already pushes some games to the 120 FPS mark on Xbox Series X. Like New Super Lucky’s Tale.
Games that support this faster frame rate will no doubt continue to be added, but for now that selection is likely small to start.
FPS Boost on Xbox Series X and Series S will begin with a small selection of games
The reason things are starting somewhat small, as opposed to working with every backwards compatible title, is because Microsoft had to work closely with specific partners to perfect the feature.
The company says that FPS Boost will initially be available for select titles. And it has already announced its first offerings. This includes New Super Lucky’s Tale, Watch Dogs 2, Far Cry 4, UFC 4, and finally Sniper Elite 4.
According to Microsoft, these games were selected for a few different reasons. One of those being that fans love these games and they’re extremely popular.
Another being that they allow Microsoft to showcase different ways FPS Boost can be a beneficial feature. And while the list is small Microsoft absolutely plans to expand the list of backwards compatible game titles that will see benefits from FPS Boost.
It’s just a matter of waiting for them to be optimized and thrown into the mix. The company doesn’t give any time frames though.
Some games will get double or quadrupled frame rates
New Super Lucky’s Tale is a good example of this being put into action. With an increase of the frame rate up to 120 FPS, the game will look much better visually and have more of an immersive feel to it.
While games like UFC 4 which used to run around 30 FPS now have the capability to run at 60 FPS. Not all games will be the same of course. Depending on the game the FPS improvements will vary.
Some of the games benefiting from FPS Boost will be also be added to the Xbox Game Pass lineup. Which means you’ll experience these boosted frame rates even if you don’t own a physical or digital copy of those titles.
