Anker Launches Smaller & More Efficient Second-Gen GaN Chargers

Anker has launched the second-gen models of its GaN (gallium nitride) chargers. The new Anker GaN Nano II chargers are smaller in size and are more efficient as well. The company says it managed to achieve those upgrades by using what it calls “GaN II” technology. It is essentially the company’s second-generation version of the gallium nitride-based components.

The new chargers feature a more compact stacked design with an upgraded circuit board structure that enables higher energy efficiency. According to Anker, the upgraded technology could offer up to a 20 percent increase in working efficiency. This means the second-gen GaN chargers generate less heat and are smaller than the first-gen models.

Silicon is at the heart of most of our electrical devices but gallium nitride is being increasingly used as its replacement. GaN has higher operation efficiency than silicon. It can sustain faster electrical current at higher voltages and higher temperatures. These properties allow for smaller internal components of electronics such as chargers.

Anker’s new GaN Nano II chargers are available in three models: 30W, 45W, and 65W. The 30W model is the smallest of the trio, measuring 1.24 x 1.20 x 1.49 inches in dimensions. It is marginally smaller than the original 30W Anker PowerPort Atom PD 1 GaN charger that measured at 1.6 x 1.4 x 1.5 inches.

According to Anker, its new chargers are up to 59 percent smaller than standard chargers of comparable power output. They are also powerful enough to charge your smartphones, PCs, and other devices such as the Nintendo Switch at full speed. As Anker says, “one tiny charger for all your personal devices.”

All three Anker GaN Nano II chargers come with the company’s PowerIQ 3.0 technology. It intelligently controls the power output depending on what device is plugged in. The new chargers cost $29.99 for the 30W model, $35.99 for the 45W model, and $39.99 for the 65W model. They all feature a single USB-C port but don’t include a cable in the box. The 45W and 65W models also feature a foldable plug. All three chargers come with an 18-month warranty.

Anker is currently taking pre-orders for its new power bricks. They will be available through both the company’s official website as well as other third-party retailers such as Amazon. Shipping of pre-order units will begin over the next few weeks. The 45W model will start shipping on May 31, the 30W model on June 5, and the 65W model on June 16. They are currently available in the US only though. Anker will bring the chargers to other markets later.
