A huge Google project just got approved. Google will build a multi-billion dollar megacampus in San Jose. The project has been planned for four years, and now it has been approved by the San Jose city council.
According to the provided information, the construction will kick off next year, but it will take a long time to finish. It is said it could take Google somewhere between 10 and 30 years to fully finish the project.
Google aims to build a gigantic megacampus in San Jose, as the company will develop 80 acres of land
Saying that this campus will be large would be an understatement. It will be gigantic. It is stated that Google will develop 80 acres of land in downtown San Jose. That includes 7.3 million square feet of office space for 20,000 workers and thousands of housing units.
This will become Google’s very first mixed-use campus, and will be one of its largest ones. CNBC even states that “several council members held back tears” while approving the project. It was a unanimous decision, by the way.
In addition to this megaproject, Google is also planning to add a town-like hub 10 miles up the road in Mountain View. The company is heavily involved in its campus-building plans lately, it seems.
It will include 4,000 housing units, 300 hotel rooms, 800 residences, and more
The Downtown West campus, as this megaproject is called, will include 4,000 housing units. 1,000 of them will be designated for a range of “affordable” housing. The exact prices haven’t been determined yet, though.
The new campus will also include up to 300 hotel rooms, and 800 residences for short-term lodging. Those will serve for Google’s corporate guests, it is stated.
Google will own all 80 acres of the new campus, though more than half of the project will be allocated for residential and public space. It will include features like parks, restaurants, retail space, entertainment space, and ecological viewing stations.
More information about the project will likely surface before construction begins next year.
