OnePlus 6, 6T Start Receiving The May Security Update

The OnePlus 6 and OnePlus 6T are starting to receive the May 2021 Android security update. The 2018 OnePlus flagships are picking up the new update with OxygenOS 10.3.11. The official changelog only mentions the latest security patch and fixes for some known issues, though there’s not much clarity about what that exactly means.

Anyways, the latest update is unlikely to add any new features to the OnePlus 6 series phones. We will probably have to wait until the Android 11 update for new features. Both phones are scheduled to get their last major Android OS update in August. For the time being, we will have to be content with security updates.

May security update released for OnePlu 6 and OnePlus 6T

OnePlus 6 and 6T arrived with Android 9 Pie in October 2018. Both devices featured the Snapdragon 845 chipset with 6GB/8GB of RAM and a dual rear camera setup. The only major difference between the two is a smaller AMOLED display and lesser storage (64GB) on the base variant of the former device (128GB on OnePlus 6T). The OnePlus 6T also got an under-display optical fingerprint scanner. The vanilla OnePlus 6 featured a rear-mounted capacitive fingerprint sensor.

Despite being nearly three years old and fast approaching their end-of-life, the OnePlus 6 and 6T are still very capable devices. They received the Android 10 update last year. While the wait for the Android 11 update continues, OnePlus has been doing well to regularly push security updates to its 2018 flagships. They had received a security update last month and are now picking up this month’s release as well.

The latest update for the OnePlus 6 and 6T is rolling out for users across the world. The incremental rollout began over the weekend and users from the Netherlands, Germany, Indonesia, and several other countries have already confirmed receiving it. The new software should reach all eligible units over the course of this week.

If you haven’t already received it, be on the lookout for this update in the coming days. You should receive a notification to download the update over the air (OTA). You can also manually check for updates from your phone’s Settings app. The Oxygen Updater app, which is available on the Google Play Store, also lets you find the latest OTA updates for your OnePlus phone.
