Galaxy Watch 3, Watch Active 2 Get A Minor Software Update

Samsung is rolling out a new software update to two of its most recent smartwatches – the Galaxy Watch 3 and the Galaxy Watch Active 2. It is a minor update based on Tizen OS 5.5.0.2 and focuses on improving the icons for a couple of features.

According to the official changelogs, the new update for the Galaxy Watch 3 and the Galaxy Watch Active 2 enhances the icons for auto walking, auto running, and inactive time alerts. The update is rolling out with build numbers R840XXU1BUE3 and R820XXU1DUE3 for the two watches respectively. The changelog also mentions the generic “improved device stability.”

The latest update for the two Galaxy watches is currently rolling out to users in the US. The rollout has just begun and should reach other parts of the world in the coming days. If you own either of the Galaxy Watch 3 and the Galaxy Watch Active 2, you should receive a notification from the Galaxy Wearable app on your connected smartphone to download the new software for your watch.

Alternatively, you can manually trigger the over the air (OTA) update from the Galaxy Wearable app as well. Simply navigate to Watch software update and then tap on Download and install. If there’s any update available, you’ll be prompted to download it on the next screen.

New Galaxy Watch 3, Galaxy Watch Active 2 update tweaks a few icons

Samsung is ditching Tizen OS and replacing it with Google’s Wear OS for its smartwatches going forward. The upcoming Galaxy Watch 4 series will ship with the new platform out of the box. However, the company will not be updating the existing lineup of its Galaxy watches with Wear OS. They will continue to run Tizen OS till the end of their life.

The Galaxy Watch 3 arrived with Tizen OS version 5.5 in August last year. It has not received any major OS updates yet but Samsung has been regularly pushing feature updates to the device. In February this year, the watch received a major feature update to Tizen OS 5.5.02 (from 5.5.0.1), introducing tons of new features.

The Galaxy Watch Active 2 had also received a similar update in January. This device was launched with Tizen OS version 4.0 in September 2019. So it has already received its first major OS update to Tizen OS version 5.5. Both the watches should get updated to Tizen OS 6.0 or later in the coming months.

In the meantime, Samsung is rolling out a minor update to them. If you own either of the Galaxy Watch 3 and the Galaxy Watch Active 2, be on the lookout for this update in the coming days.
