Google has a new gadget, dubbed the Nest Power Connector, poised to make installing a Nest thermostat much easier for more smart home buyers.
The recently reported device was launched wholly separately from this week’s ongoing Google I/O 2021 event. But it should go a long way toward accomplishing its goal. That’s because, as its name implies, it does away with one of the limiting requirements of Nest thermostats.
As Google bills the $24.99 gadget, it helps users bypass the need for a C wire to be run in a home. That often requires an electrician and the hefty bill associated with that. Effectively working as an adapter to ensure constant power to Nest thermostat setups.
How does this new kit help power smart home thermostats from Nest?
There are, of course, some drawbacks and caveats to this new Nest product from Google. Just for starters, it only works with 24 VAC systems. It won’t work with millivolt or high-voltage systems. And it also requires a third-generation Nest Learning Thermostat, Nest Thermostat E, or the latest Nest Thermostat — pending a software update.
Otherwise, the concepts surrounding the Nest Power Connector are fairly straightforward. The kit includes all of the wire connectors and labels that will be needed. That’s in addition to a sticky pad and an installation guide that will work with a number of thermostat wiring arrangements. Users follow those guides to attach the adapter to a furnace, air handler, or zone controller. All without the need to drill new holes or run wires.
The design language, conversely, is straightforward as well. Google is offering the gadget in a “Snow” color to match the white of its thermostats. And they’re rated at IP51 dust- and water resistance so they can survive being installed inside the HVAC.
Pricing and availability
In terms of pricing and availability, an exact date for the latter hasn’t been made known just yet. But the company has opened up pre-orders for US customers starting today.
