Samsung has just taken the covers off of a suite of new chipsets. These new Samsung 5G chipsets will have a focus on improving 5G performance. They will power Samsung devices that will launch in 2022.
The first of the new Samsung 5G chipsets is a 3rd generation RFIC
The new chipsets were announced at Samsung Network: Redefined. This was the company’s most recent virtual event. At the event, the company announced three new chipsets that are set to be put into the next slew of 5G enabled devices. These, however, don’t apply to smartphones.
First on the list, there’s the 3rd generation radio frequency integrated circuit (RFIC). This is a fundamental chip that enables signal connectivity. It will power the next generation of Samsung’s Compact Macros, which are the company’s 5G radios. These new RFICs will support frequencies between 28GHz and 39GHz.
The company states that there will be significant improvements to efficiency over previous generations. The antennas will be overall smaller with a 50% size decrease. While it’s smaller in size, Samsung claims that the power output will be doubled.
The next chip will be a 2nd generation 5G modem SoC
Samsung unveiled a new 2nd generation 5G SoC. The first generation powered the last generation of baseband units and Compact Macros. The current generation 5G modem SoCs are powering more that 200,000 devices.
The next generation 5G modem SoCs will support both mmWave signals and sub-6 (below 6 GHz) signal bands. Much like with the new RFIC, the new 5G modem SoC will bring additional power output to its devices as well as reducing the overall size. They will go on to power future baseband units and Compact Macros.
The last chip is a DFE-RFIC Integrated Chip
The last chip will also be compatible with mmWave and sub-6 signal bands. It combines DFE (Digital Front End) and RFIC functionality in order to acheive this. Samsung states that because it combines these functions, it’s able to decrease overall size and maximize power output for the devices that it’s put into. One device that will use this chip is the next generation Compact Macro.
5G is still growing
The 5G race is still ramping up. More and more people are getting access to 5G through their respective carriers. T-Mobile is leading the pack with its latest milestone. The company now covers 300 million people in its 5G signal. That’s a milestone that was passed six months in advance. These new Samsung chipsets show that we have a lot to look forward to in the 5G space next year.
