Samsung Might Be Preparing To Launch Watch Design Studio At MWC

Samsung recently announced that it will unveil its vision for the future of smartwatches at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2021 next week. The company says it is reimagining smartwatches with new opportunities for both developers and consumers. While it’s unclear what this “new watch experience” will exactly bring, recent trademark applications from the Korean behemoth give us some hints.

Dutch publication LetsGoDigital has discovered two new trademark applications from Samsung. The first one is for the name ‘Watch Design Studio’ which the company describes as a “retail store services for smartwatches and band straps”. This software will allow “customers to customize and design and purchase smartwatches and smartwatch band straps.”

The description, as well as the name, closely match Samsung’s existing Galaxy Watch Studio service. Initially called Galaxy Watch Designer, this service lets users design watch faces for Samsung smartwatches and distribute them via the Galaxy Store. The Galaxy Watch Studio app can be downloaded from the Galaxy Store but is currently available in beta only. So perhaps, the company is now preparing to release a full-fledged app with more features and, seemingly, a new name.

Additionally, Samsung has also filed for a trademark for the moniker ‘Good Lock’. The description for this name reads: “Downloadable software for smartphones and tablet computers, software for operation, implementing, controlling, using and customizing user interface on smartphones and tablet computers.”

Good Lock, if you don’t already know, is also an existing suite of customization software from Samsung. It offers tons of customization tools for Samsung Galaxy smartphones. However, its availability is limited to just a handful of markets. This trademark application suggests the company is looking to expand the app to more countries.

Samsung could talk about Watch Design Studio and Good Lock at MWC 2021

Both newly-discovered trademark applications from Samsung were filed with the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) on July 22nd, 2021. This suggests that the company will talk about these services during this year’s MWC.

Along with the “new watch experience,” Samsung will also talk about the Galaxy ecosystem and mobile security at MWC 2021. The company is unlikely to unveil any new products at the upcoming mega event though. It has two new foldables, two new smartwatches, and a new pair of truly wireless earbuds for launch in the coming months.

MWC 2021 will take place between June 28 and July 1 in Barcelona. Samsung has pulled out of the in-person exhibitions due to coronavirus concerns. However, the company will be participating in the event virtually. It has scheduled an online session for Monday, June 28th, at 7:15 PM CET/10:15 AM PST. The event will be available live at Samsung Newsroom as well as the company’s official YouTube channel.
