Twitter users don’t like getting mentioned in conversations that they don’t want to be a part of. Because of this, a new Twitter unmention feature is coming to the platform. This news comes to us from a tweet by Dominic Camozzi, the privacy designer at Twitter.
The Twitter unmention feature will have some much-needed benefits for users
When a Twitter user is ‘mentioned’, it means that another user posted their user handle in a tweet or comment. That user will then get notifications about subsequent comments in that conversation. While it may be harmless for the most part, a lot of people don’t want to be thrust into random Twitter conversations.
The Twitter unmention feature will give users the ability to step away from any Twitter conversation that they don’t want filling up their notifications. The tweet expands upon a few aspects of this feature in a thread. The first tweet in the thread shows a user being notified that they’ve been mentioned in a tweet. Under that, there’s the ‘Unmention Yourself’ button.
This feature goes beyond just taking yourself out of one tweet
If you are mentioned by a person who you don’t follow, you will get a special notification. What’s neat is that after you unmention yourself from a conversation, then that user won’t be able to mention you again. If the user tries to mention you again, they will be notified that you can not be mentioned.
The new Twitter unmention feature should be great for people who get a lot of mentions. A lot of popular Twitter users get bombarded by notifications of mentions that they really don’t want. This is not only great for Twitter users but people who use Facebook and other social media platforms.
What if you want to block out, not one, but ALL mentions? Twitter has a solution for that. If you dig into the settings, you will see the option to stop mentions from everyone. There are only a few options to choose from so far. You will be able to block mentions for one, three, and seven days at a time. You will be able to stop getting mentions for up to a week at a time.
The tweet doesn’t say if there will be the option to suspend mentions indefinitely. It would be nice if that functionality were to come eventually. A lot of users would love to stop mentions altogether.
There’s no word on when this feature will be hitting the platform. When it drops, don’t be surprised if it hits iOS users before it gets to Android users.
