A fan favorite feature that’s been added to Android 12 is Dynamic Color. More apps and aspects of the Android 12 UI have been adopting it over the past couple of weeks. Now, Dynamic Color for Chrome has just been spotted by 9to5Google.
What is Dynamic Color?
If you’ve been paying attention to the Android 12 beta news, Dynamic Color should be engraved into your memory. When you assign a wallpaper on your phone, the system will pick the prominent colors and create a custom color palette for the UI. Menus, Google apps, and other parts of the UI will be decorated with the new color palette.
Apps like Gboard, Google calculator, and Google Feed have been given the Dynamic Color treatment. This goes for a possible custom icon pack that Google might be unveiling eventually. More first party Google apps are set to be compatible with Dynamic Color soon.
Dynamic Color for Chrome was spotted in version 93.0.4561
Google stated that it planned on eventually bringing Dynamic Color to Chrome over the past few weeks. Now, based on a flag that was found within the app, it looks like that day has finally come. Looking through the app’s code, we see the flag that’s called #dynamic-color-android. You only need to enable the flag and you’ll officially be able to use Dynamic Color in Chrome.
It’s pretty limited at the moment, however
When you enable Dynamic Color for Chrome, the app will restart. Once you do so, you’ll see that there aren’t really any big differences. The interface will look the same for the most part. This is because the only part of the app that gets affected by Dynamic is the settings menu.
Based on the colors in your wallpaper, the only change you’ll see will be in the top banner of the settings menu. Everything else will look the exact same. This may be disappointing to folks who really wanted to see some big changes, but this is still a work in progress.
There are still parts of the Chrome UI that can make use of Dynamic Color. There’s the search bar, the tab view, and menus that can have their colors swapped. Google is most likely still working on this, so you can expect more changes to come along in the coming months.
