Google Pixel 6 Pro Could Launch Under A Different Name After All

The Google Pixel 6 Pro could launch under a different name. Google itself kind of suggested it may happen. The company “casually namedropped” the ‘Pixel 6’ and ‘Pixel 6 XL’ names, as XDA Developers put it.

The Google Pixel 6 Pro could launch under a different name, including the ‘XL’ moniker

The company did that in a developer form, though it quickly removed the references. We were expecting the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro to arrive, but the latter will have a different name it seems. That means Google is not looking to change the naming it used thus far. The Pixel 4 XL launched in 2019, in case you forgot.

Google mentioned these names in the developer documentation for the new Game Mode API, which the company describes as ‘Game Mode Interventions’. These are game-specific optimizations set by OEMs.

Google actually opened up a form for Mode Intervention requests for Pixel phones. One of the questions included in the form asks developers which devices the WindowManager backbuffer resize intervention settings should be applied to.

The company actually listed Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 XL (shown below) as an example when it comes to devices. As already mentioned, the reference was quickly removed, but this kind of suggests Google will use those names.

This information doesn’t ultimately confirm these names, but it sure makes them a viable option

Do note that this doesn’t ultimately confirm these will be the names Google will use. These could be just placeholders that Google is using for its upcoming devices. It is possible, though, we’ll have to wait and see.

The Google Pixel 6 and 6 Pro / XL have been leaking for quite some time now. We’ve even seen some CAD-based renders of the two phones, and some of their specs also surfaced.

These two phones will be the first ones to ship with Google’s very own processor. They will include fast charging, and likely be made out of metal and glass. The Pixel 6 series will also be considerably more flashy than the devices Google announced last year.
