According to a new report by The Elec, Google’s first foldable phone will include an ultra thin glass (UTG) layer. The phone will include a 7.6-inch foldable display that will be provided by Samsung Display.

Google’s first foldable phone will allegedly feature an ultra thin glass (UTG) layer

As most of you know by now, Google is expected to announce its first foldable smartphone this year. The codename ‘passport’ has been spotted a while back, and it allegedly represents Google’s foldable project.

That device is expected to arrive in the fourth quarter of this year. It is quite possible it won’t launch alongside the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro, though that remains to be seen. Judging by everything we’ve seen thus far, that foldable device may arrive a bit later.

Other than some details regarding its main display, we don’t know much about the device. Based on the size of its main display, though, it’s easy to realize that this will be a foldable tablet, not a clamshell smartphone.

This device will be a direct competitor to the Galaxy Z Fold 3

In other words, this phone will compete directly with the Galaxy Z Fold 3, Xiaomi Mi MIX Fold, etc. Other details regarding this phone are still being held under wraps. Knowing how much information usually surfaces when it comes to Google devices, it won’t stay that way for long.

Chances are we’ll see plenty of information out in the open in the coming months. Some may assume that the first foldable smartphone from Google will resemble the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro. Well, that is possible, but may not be the case.

Google may opt for similar design cues just for the brand’s sake, but on the other hand, this is a completely different category of a product. So, the company may opt to change things around.

We’re expecting the first foldable phone from the company to include high-end specifications. Google may utilize its own SoC inside this phone, the same one that it will include the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro.
