A smartphone with 20GB of RAM could be coming sooner than you think. The company that may announce it is ZTE, actually. The company’s executive has hinted that may happen.
ZTE may be the first company to introduce a smartphone with 20GB of RAM
Lu Qianhao, ZTE’s executive, shared a post on Weibo (a Chinese social media network). In rough translation, he basically said that a device with 20GB of RAM is extremely smooth. Pretty much everyone believes he was talking about a smartphone.
Now, some of you may think that 16GB of RAM is the most we have in a smartphone today. Well, that’s not true. The Lenovo Legion 2 Pro has a version with 18GB of RAM. So, 20GB of RAM in a ZTE smartphone wouldn’t be all that different.
If ZTE ends up including 20GB of RAM in a smartphone, that device will become the first phone with so much RAM. Well, at least to our knowledge, we don’t know a single phone that has more than 18GB.
Do note that it’s possible not all of that RAM will be physical. Some smartphone OEMs are turning towards virtual RAM additions, so this phone could have 18GB of RAM and 2GB of virtual RAM, or some other combination.
On the flip side, it wouldn’t surprise us if ZTE actually went ahead and include 20GB of physical RAM, of course. Lenovo included 18GB of RAM inside its smartphone, so… why not.
Needless to say, 20GB of RAM would be overkill
Needless to say, that is an overkill in a smartphone. Well, 12GB and 16GB of RAM is a heavy overkill, basically. There are phones out there with 6GB of RAM that work flawlessly, even with heavy use, so… there you go.
The post from the source does not confirm that a phone is coming, so keep that in mind. It is possible that ZTE is only testing it, and Lu Qianhao is talking about that phone. It does not guarantee that it will arrive, let alone soon, but we’ll see. If ZTE does opt to release such a device, it’s possible it will be a gaming smartphone.
