The Samsung Exynos lineup of mobile chipsets will get a new variant within the next few months. Known as the Exynos 2200 under the codename “Pamir,” this flagship chip will be built on a 4nm process. Moreover, the GPU on the latest Exynos silicon will bear the codename “Voyager.” This is based on the AMD RDNA 2 architecture.
The revelation comes from user Ice Universe on Weibo (via Phone Arena), who has a good track record on industry leaks.
The arrival of Exynos 2200 will coincide with the launch of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 895. Reports suggest that the new Snapdragon 895 will be manufactured by Samsung using the same node as the Exynos 2200.
It’s worth noting that the Exynos 2200 may not arrive until at least January 2022 or even later. Meanwhile, the Snapdragon 895 chip will likely make its debut in December 2021.
A GPU based on the AMD RDNA 2 architecture could give Samsung an upper hand over its rivals
Samsung started using ARM’s CPU architecture in place of its custom cores with the Exynos 2100. Sources suggest that this trend will continue with the successor as well. The Exynos 2200 will reportedly run on ARM’s new Cortex X2 CPU cores built on tri-cluster architecture.
The GPU will be the key highlight here. For reference, modern gaming consoles like the Xbox Series X and the Sony PlayStation 5 use the same AMD RDNA 2 architecture. The newest arrival in the Radeon RX 6000 range of GPUs may also carry this architecture.
Given these credentials, the Exynos 2200 may possess a significant advantage over its contemporaries in the market.
Rumors hint that the new Exynos chipset will make its debut with the Galaxy S22 early next year. Though the timeline is unclear right now, it’s safe to say that the flagship will reach shelves by the first half of 2022. Since there will be no new Galaxy Note flagship this year, the focus has already shifted to the early 2022 flagship.
Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S22 will also be available with the latest Snapdragon 895 chipset. The Exynos 2200 variant will likely be reserved for the International Version, as has been the case previously.
A report from March this year indicated that Samsung might be working on three Exynos chipsets for 2021. The company has come a long way from the early days of the Exynos lineup when complaints of overheating and underwhelming performance were widespread.
