Vivo seems to be developing a new smartphone with a “flying camera”. That does sound weird, so let us explain. This phone actually comes with a detachable module that can… yes, fly.
Vivo presented its idea in a new patent that surfaced on WIPO (World Intellectual Property Office), and was spotted by Letsgodigital. The documentation for the patent was submitted in December last year, but it was published yesterday.
This Vivo smartphone actually has a flying camera module that… flies
This smartphone doesn’t really look any different from a regular handset, until a detachable module is presented. There is a compartment at the bottom of this phone, where you’ll spot that module.
The module itself contains two cameras, three infrared proximity sensors, four propellers, and an extra battery. The mounting bracket, which has a fingerprint sensor attached to it, can be detached from the camera system.
Once you do that, the camera system will be able to fly, thanks to those four propellers that are integrated. This should allow you to take some great-looking photos, from all types of angles. This flying module should be able to avoid objects as well, thanks to its infrared sensors.
If this phone ever becomes a reality, chances are you’ll be able to navigate that module by using your phone. Considering it has infrared sensors, it’s also possible it will be able to fly on its own, and follow you. It may even respond to some gesture commands, who knows. This could essentially be a really tiny drone.
This design was inspired by ‘Airselfie’ cameras
This flying camera module is inspired by “Airselfie” cameras. Such cameras are not exactly new, but none has been attached to a smartphone before. This way, you could have such a nice camera with you at all times, and simply detach it when you need it.
Vivo does patent a lot of designs every year. Just because it patented this smartphone design doesn’t exactly mean that it will become a reality. In fact, there’s a higher chance this phone won’t ever launch, than it will, but we’ll see.
