AMD is making some big claims with its latest laptop chips to hit the market, the Ryzen 6000 series, which it just announced this morning during CES. These succeed the Ryzen 5000 series for laptops that it announced last year at the same time. And promise to offer significant gains to those using a machine powered by these new chips.
According to AMD, the Ryzen 6000 series laptop chips will net users 1.3 times faster processing on top of twice the gaming performance compared to previous models. AMD will have two different lineups geared at separate groups of consumers.
The H series for gamers and creators, and the U series offering thin and powerful mobility. Likely aimed at the more general consumer who doesn’t need the most powerful computing available. That’s not to say the U series chips won’t provide ample power and performance though. Based on AMD’s own benchmarks, U series chips can deliver up to 114 frames per second in Call of Duty: Vanguard using super-sampling.
While that’s probably not with the highest graphics settings possible, it’s not bad at all. Laptops with these chips should be announced during CES this week, and the first available models should be up for sale sometime next month.
AMD Ryzen 6000 series laptop chips get better battery life
Better gaming performance isn’t all you can expect from a laptop with these new chips. They should also offer better battery life. AMD notes that the Ryzen 6000 series laptops should get up to 24 hours of battery life on a single charge.
Though, do keep in mind that times will probably vary wildly from user to user. And will be based on how those laptops are being used. For instance, don’t expect up to 24 hours of battery life if all you’re doing is gaming.
The Ryzen 6000 series chips are built using AMD’s Zen 3 Plus architecture. As well as its RDNA 2 graphics architecture for integrated GPUs, which was used for the chips inside the PS5 and Xbox Series X.
AMD’s flagship model from the 6000 series chips is the 6980HX, featuring 8 cores and 16 threads, in addition to a max boost of 5.0, a 20MB L2 + L3 cache, 12 GPU cores with a max boost of 2.4GHz, and a 45W+ TDP.
