MediaTek has launched the Dimensity 1050, its first smartphone processor with mmWave 5G support. It enables a seamless 5G experience with simultaneous connection and auto-switching between multiple 5G spectrums depending on network strength. The new chipset will power premium mid-range Android smartphones starting in Q3 2022.
MediaTek Dimensity 1050 specifications and features
The Dimensity 1050 is a 6nm SoC (system-on-chip) built on TSMC’s process node, which should make it quite power-efficient. The octa-core processor has two Cortex-A78 CPU cores clocked at 2.5GHz and six Cortex-A55 cores at 1.8GHz. The chipset supports heterogeneous multi-processing and features the Mali-G610 MC3 GPU for handling graphics duties. We also have MediaTek’s HyperEngine 5.0 technology for a smoother gaming experience.
The new MediaTek processor supports LPDDR5 RAM and UFS 3.1 storage standards. It can handle Full HD+ displays (2520 x 1080 resolution) at up to 144Hz refresh rate. Its native 10-bit color allows for vibrant HDR screens and a billion-color palette. The Taiwanese company’s MediaTek APU 550 is there for on-device AI processing.
The Dimensity 1050 can handle cameras up to 108-megapixel resolution. It supports 4K video recording and playback at 30fps (frames per second) with HDR10+ and Dolby Vision video standards. Major camera features include 3D noise reduction, Hardware Depth Engine, Warping Engine, and Dual HDR Video Capture Engine. These are flagship-grade camera technologies and can also be found on MediaTek’s Dimensity 9000 and Dimensity 8000 processors.
It boasts dual 5G connectivity and Wi-Fi 6E
For the uninitiated, 5G networks exist in multiple spectrums. While the mmWave spectrum delivers super-fast speeds, it isn’t as reliable and widely available as the sub-6GHz spectrum. But the latter isn’t as speedy. MediaTek’s Dimensity 1050 supports both spectrums and can connect to them simultaneously. It automatically switches to the more stable and reliable network.
Thanks to 4CC carrier aggregation on the mmWave spectrum and 3CC carrier aggregation on the Sub-6GHz spectrum, MediaTek is touting up to 53 percent faster cellular speeds 4G LTE + mmWave aggregation. 3CC carrier aggregation also ensures faster peak speeds of up to 4.6Gbps in sub-6GHz exclusive domains.
The Dimensity 1050 also includes dual 5G SA (standalone) and dual VoNR (Voice over New Radio). So it allows you to use two 5G networks on your device at the same time. Other highlights include Wi-Fi 6E with 2×2 MIMO (multiple-input and multiple-output), Bluetooth 5.3, and GPS, BeiDou, Glonass, Galileo, QZSS and NavIC navigation systems.
MediaTek also announced Dimensity 930 and Helio G99
In addition to the Dimensity 1050, Mediatek has also launched the Dimensity 930 and Helio G99 smartphone processors. The former is a 6nm 5G chipset aimed at low-cost devices. The latter is a 4G-only SoC. All of these chipsets will start appearing inside devices soon.
