Google continues to prove that megapixels aren’t the end all, be all for cameras on smartphones
For years, many OEMs led consumers to believe that since their camera has the most megapixels, that it’s the best. Photographers, however have known that to not be true. With smartphones, software is the most important thing for a camera. Not only the camera app, but also the post-processing. Google continues to show that this is the case, especially with the new Pixel 7 Pro. Which is likely why our readers chose it as the Best Camera Smartphone of 2022.
Google’s Pixel smartphones have had great cameras for many years. But somehow, Google is still able to make the cameras better, add new features and modes, and continue to impress us with software. This year, Google really stepped up to the plate for Zoom. Allowing the main sensor to zoom at 2x, thanks to having more pixels. The main sensor is a 50-megapixel sensor, so Google is able to crop in, at a 2x telephoto length. Giving you a great 2x zoomed in picture, without degrading the photo.
And then on the telephoto lens, it can do 5x zoom for pictures. And thanks to the Super Res Zoom software – which first debuted on the Pixel 4 – you are able to do 10x optical zoom and still look really good. It can go all the way up to 30x zoom, via digital however.
It’s not just about the camera for the Pixel 7 Pro, however
The Pixel 7 Pro is a great all-around smartphone from Google. It’s not just the impressive cameras, but it is also priced pretty aggressively. Coming in at $899, where competitors are typically priced at $999 or more.
On top of that, it runs on Android 13, with Google’s Pixel Experience overlayed. It will get three years of updates too. So you’ll see Android 16 land on the Pixel 7 Pro.
It checks just about every box for a smartphone. Down to the display, which is a curved 6.7-inch QHD+ AMOLED 120Hz panel. And it looks absolutely stunning.
So it comes as no surprise why the Google Pixel 7 Pro won our Readers Choice for the Best Camera Smartphone of 2022.
