Apple is facing yet another lawsuit over its AirTags that were released in April of 2021. This time around, two women in San Francisco are suing the Cupertino-based company. The lawsuit claims that an “ex-boyfriend of one of the women who filed the lawsuit planted an AirTag in the wheel well of her car and was able to find out where she had moved to avoid his harassment, according to the proposed class-action complaint filed Monday in federal court in San Francisco.”
While the other woman had a similar issue, stating that “her estranged husband tracked her movements by placing an AirTag in her child’s backpack”.
This isn’t new, and is likely an issue that Apple will have to continue to contend with while they are still selling and supporting the AirTag. The product is so good, that’s being used for bad things.
Apple has already released some changes to AirTags to help improve detection for unknown AirTags, as well as louder AirTag alerts and more. But it looks like more changes are coming.
AirTags are more popular than Tile
If you’re wondering why we’re hearing a lot more about these sorts of things about AirTags than we ever did with Tile, it’s because it’s Apple. For one, when its about Apple, things are magnified. The other reason is that AirTags are already a lot more popular than Tile ever was. Not to mention the fact that AirTags use the iPhone’s Find My network. So it’s constantly connecting to WiFi networks. Making it easy to find things that are miles and miles away.
Unwanted tracking is an unwanted problem for Apple, but one they’ll have to continue dealing with. Until they decide to stop selling AirTags altogether. And at this point, it might not be worth it to keep AirTags around. Due to all the bad publicity and all of the lawsuits they have been facing.
