Samsung is on a roll today. It began the day by rolling out the January 2023 Android security patch to the Galaxy Z Fold 4, Galaxy Z Flip 4, Galaxy Z Fold 3, Galaxy Z Flip 3, and Galaxy S10 Lite in various parts of the world, including the US. The company then released the Android 13 update for the unlocked Galaxy S20 and Galaxy A42 5G stateside.
Now, the firm is seeding the latest security update to a few more Galaxy devices. The Galaxy S21 FE, Galaxy A50, and international versions of the Galaxy Note 20 5G are getting the new SMR (Security Maintenance Release).
The January SMR for the Galaxy S21 FE is currently rolling out in a handful of Latin American countries. Namely, Argentina, Colombia, and Mexico. The new firmware version for the device in the region is G990EXXS3DWA6 (via).
The package doesn’t contain anything apart from this month’s vulnerability fixes. Samsung has already revealed that the latest SMR patches more than 70 vulnerabilities, with the vast majority of them being high-severity issues. These fixes should reach Galaxy S21 FE users in other markets, including the US, over the next few days.
Meanwhile, if you’re using Samsung’s 5G-enabled Galaxy Note 20 phones, the January SMR may be available for your phone. The company began the rollout for unlocked units in the US a couple of weeks back. Since then it has expanded the update to several international markets (covering 4G models too).
As of today, the Galaxy Note 20 5G and Galaxy Note 20 Ultra 5G are getting the latest security patch in even more regions. The devices are getting the update with firmware version N98*BXXS5GWA8. Unsurprisingly, there aren’t any new features in this package too.
Samsung has also released the January 2023 update for the Galaxy A50
The Galaxy A50 is another Samsung smartphone that started getting the January security update recently. The latest SMR for this mid-range phone is available in a bunch of Latin American countries. Depending on the model number, the new firmware version in the region is either A505GUBS9CWA2 or A505GTUBS9CWA1.
Since this phone is almost four years old now, it is no longer getting monthly security updates. So Samsung may not release the January SMR for it in some markets. Perhaps this may be the penultimate software update for the Galaxy A50. It will complete four years in the market in March this year. The Korean firm will likely only push one more update to it. If you’re using this device, you should consider upgrading to a newer model.
