Don't expect QHD+ display for Galaxy S23 & Galaxy S23+

Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy S23 series has been subject to a myriad of leaks over the past couple of months or so. And as we inch closer to the launch event next month, leaks are coming thick and fast. Today, we have some information about the display panels that these phones will feature.

The Galaxy S23 series will get the same display resolution and refresh rates

A fresh rumor passed along on Twitter reveals that the Galaxy S23 trio will get pretty much the same displays as the Galaxy S22 series, at least in terms of size, resolution, and refresh rate. We are talking about a 6.1-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2x panel on the base model, a 6.6-inch panel on the Galaxy S23+, and a 6.8-inch screen on the Galaxy S23 Ultra. This isn’t the first time we’ve heard this, of course. Since the new phones are of the same shape and size as their respective predecessors, it isn’t a surprise that the display sizes remain the same.

However, Samsung isn’t offering a resolution upgrade either. The smaller two models will still feature FHD+ screens (1080 x 2340 pixels) while the Ultra model will get have a QHD+ resolution (1440×3088 pixels). This has been the trend since the Galaxy S21 series in 2021 and it isn’t changing this year. The entire Galaxy S20 lineup had QHD+ screens, so it’s disappointing that Samsung has gone backward after 2020. But, it is what it is. Thankfully, the company has stopped this disparity on the brightness front. All three Galaxy S23 models will reportedly boast 1,750 nits of peak brightness. The vanilla Galaxy S22 maxed out at 1,300 nits.

Coming to the refresh rate, things are once again looking the same, though. The latest rumor claims a variable refresh rate of 1-120Hz for the Galaxy S23 Ultra, but that for the other two models will range between 48-120Hz. That’s the same rating as the Galaxy S22 series. If you remember, there was confusion around this shortly after the 2022 flagships arrived on the market. Samsung originally stated that all devices will boast variable refresh rates of 10-120Hz. The company later explained that it was talking about a proprietary technology that dictates data transfer rates between the processor and the display.

Samsung will launch its new flagships early in February

If rumors are to be believed, the Galaxy S23 series will be official four weeks from now. Samsung will reportedly host its next Galaxy Unpacked event on Wednesday, February 1. If history is any indication, leaks about the phones should become more frequent and richer in information in the coming weeks. We will keep you posted.
