The Snapdragon 8cx Gen 4 processor is yet to launch, but its specifications have popped up on the internet. This coming processor from Qualcomm will find its way to several laptops once it launches. From the available specifications, it is clear that Qualcomm means business with this coming processor.
Over a year ago, Qualcomm acquired Nuvia, a startup run by ex-Apple CPU designers. This acquisition aims at growing the performance of the Snapdragon processors. Qualcomm’s coming laptop processor will get some performance improvement thanks to the Nuvia in-house design.
With this coming processor, Qualcomm will adopt a new marketing name. Unlike the “Kryo” nomenclature, the 8cx Gen 4 will use the name “Oryon.” Let’s now take a look at the leaked specifications of the coming laptop processor.
Leaked specifications of the coming Snapdragon 8cx Gen 4 processor
From the available specifications, it is clear that Qualcomm is focusing on power and performance. This might put the Snapdragon 8cx Gen 4 processor in line to compete with top players from Intel and Apple. For starters, this processor is a 12-core chip, with 8 cores for performance and 4 for efficiency.
The 8 cores will execute ~3.4GHz cycles per second, while the 4 cores will execute ~2.5GHz cycles per second. According to the available leaks, there will be a 12MB L2 cache that will be shared among 4 cores. There will also be 8MB of L3 cache, 12MB system-level cache, and 4MP graphics cache.
The amount of RAM this coming processor will pack is mind-blowing. It is said to support a maximum of 64GB worth of LPDDR5X RAM, which is more than what the Apple M2 chip offers. According to the leak, the Snapdragon 8cx Gen 4 RAM is said to be an 8-channel configuration and run at 4.2GHz.
What is more? This processor is also said to come with the Adreno 740 and PCIe v4.0 which is a welcomed improvement. There will be 12 lanes of PCIe v4.0 and 2 lanes of UFS 4.0 storage. When it comes to connectivity, this processor promises to support enough ports like USB 3, USB 4, and display ports. More information on the Snapdragon 8cx Gen 4 will become available in the coming months ahead of its 2024 launch.
