Twitch is beginning to roll out a new feature to all users today called Chat History. And it’s probably just as you’re imagining it. When you pull up a stream and open up the chat, you’ll be able to see a more specific history of that chat from other Twitch users. With this feature, you’ll be able to get caught up on the conversation in two different ways.
You can either see the last 50 messages or the last hour of messages. Which one you see will depend on which option is less. So for example, if you hop into chat and there’s 200 messages in the last hour, you’ll see the last 50 messages. Expect to see the last hour of conversation in the chat window for streamers who have a smaller community contributing to the chat during that livestream. While larger streamers are likely to show you the last 50 messages that have been sent due to the number of users in the chat.
If you’ve ever popped into a Twitch chat for a larger streamer before, then you know how challenging it can be sometimes to read what everyone is saying. If there’s a large number of people talking, the chat can move much too fast to get a handle on what everyone is talking about. This new feature should help alleviate that.
Twitch chat history will take a few days to roll out completely
The feature is starting to roll out today. However, Twitch says it could take a few days before the rollout is complete. So maybe you get lucky and you’ll see it today, and maybe not. At the latest most users should see it go live by this coming weekend. If not somewhere closer to the middle of the week.
Chat history may seem like a small change. But it’s a quality-of-life improvement that is sure to get more people engaging in conversation during streams.
