Galaxy S23 drop test shows sustainability doesn't affect durability

A new drop test of Samsung‘s Galaxy S23 phones shows sustainability doesn’t compromise durability. The devices feature more sustainable materials than their respective predecessors but they are as durable as the Galaxy S22 series if not more.

Conducted by the YouTube Channel Allstate Protection Plans, this drop test of the Galaxy S23, Galaxy S23+, and Galaxy S23 Ultra is a little different from the ones we saw before. It uses machine-assisted free fall from six feet high to ensure that the phones experience a minimal disturbance to orientation. The idea is to standardize drop tests for every device and maintain test consistency. As a test showed earlier this month, devices don’t always land similarly when abruptly dropped from a height. Comparing those results may not be fair.

Nonetheless, since the Galaxy S23 phones are made of glass front and back, it’s easy to guess what will happen on dropping them onto concrete. But this video tries to evaluate if added sustainability affects durability. For a quick recap, the new Samsung flagships use up to 12 components made from eco-conscious or recycled materials such as discarded fishing nets, discarded PET (Polyethylene terephthalate) bottles, and recycled aluminum, twice as much as Galaxy S22. The Ultra model reportedly contains about 22 percent recycled content on the front and back glass.

Drop test shows Galaxy S23 Ultra is a sustainable but durable smartphone

When dropped on their screens, the Galaxy S23 Ultra suffered the least damage. Its curved screen got a few hairline cracks but that’s about it. The smallest Galaxy S23 came out the worst. A similar drop on the back side produced similar results. While the base model and the Plus had their rear glass and even the frame damaged, the Ultra model took most of the blow on the camera ring. Its rear panel came out mostly unscathed. The handset was fully operational after the two drops, while the base Galaxy S23 wasn’t. The Galaxy S23+ stopped working after a third “side-down” drop.

“The new Galaxy S23 phones are as durable or more durable than S22, proving that sustainability doesn’t have to compromise durability,” Allstate Protection Plans concluded. “Even so, none were indestructible when dropped on a sidewalk. So a case and a screen protector are still highly recommended”.
