Some of us unfortunate souls get a ton of unwanted spam calls every day, and this issue only seems to get worse as time goes on. Thankfully, WhatsApp is doing its part to help. WhatsApp is working on a feature that will silence unknown numbers, according to WABinfo.
This was spotted in a beta version of the Android app, so it’s not available to the public just yet. Also, as always, you’ll want to take this news with a grain of salt. Things in beta testing could be changed at any moment.
WhatsApp could let you silence unknown numbers
Getting unwanted calls is bad enough. It’s worse if it’s on a platform that people typically use for business. This is why WhatsApp bringing this feature is very welcome.
The Meta-owned app is working on a feature that will automatically silence calls from unknown numbers. In doing so, users will greatly reduce the number of spam calls that they receive. Since spam calls are so rampant, you can bet that the mass majority of calls from unknown numbers you get are scams.
This feature will be a simple toggle that you can turn on in the settings. If you receive a call from an unknown number, your phone won’t ring. It’ll be like the call never happened.
However, it’ll still show up in your call history. This is good because there’s always that chance that the phone silences a call that’s not spam. So, you’ll be able to review the silenced calls.
This is an important feature. It’s hard to over-emphasize how dangerous spam calls are. A lot of time, the person on the other line will use deceptive practices to make you think that you’re talking to a legitimate business. They’ll try to get you to reveal sensitive information like your banking information, location, email address, etc.
That’s the kind of information that you never want to get into the wrong hands. Since WhatsApp will silence unknown numbers, we’ll hopefully see a drop in it.
