Google is adding 1080p video to Meet, but there's a catch

Google Meet is one of the most useful video chat platforms out there, and it’s used by millions of people around the world. As popular as it is, it’s stuck on a relatively low video resolution. However, according to Android Police, Google is changing that by letting you set your Google Meet video resolution to 1080p. There’s a bit of a catch, though.

When it comes to video calls, the resolution isn’t all that important. However, having fancy backgrounds isn’t all that important either, but that doesn’t stop Google from adding them in. 1080p video is just a nice quality-of-life feature to have to boost the experience.

1080p video’s coming to Google Meet, but it’s rather limited

When you’re in a Meeting, just click on the three-dot menu in the upper right-hand corner of the screen. There, you’ll have the option to set the resolution to 1080p.

Since this is a Google Workspace feature, it will not be available to everyone. There are several different payment tiers for Google Workspace, and the 1080p video really focuses on the Business and Enterprise plans. So, if you’re using the Workspace Essential, Education Fundamentals, Business Starter, or any of the other lower plans, you will not have access to 1080p video. Also, it’s available to you if you are a Google One subscriber with a 2TB plan.

This is a bit of a bummer, as you’re able to use 1080p video with Zoom and Microsoft Teams. This probably won’t really affect most people, as having 1080p video isn’t quite required for a standard business Meeting.

If you’re excited about 1080p video for Google Meet, and you have the appropriate plan, then sit tight. Google started rolling out this feature today, but it’s a gradual rollout. This means that there’s a chance that you won’t see it today or tomorrow. In fact, this gradual rollout is taking place over the next couple of weeks. It will fully roll out by May 4th, so some people will have a while to wait.
