CD Projekt CEO denies Sony acquisition rumors

Sony has acquired quite a few studios over the past year or two, so it wouldn’t be entirely out of the realm of possibility that it could have been interested in buying CD Projekt RED. The studio behind The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077.

In fact that’s essentially what a rumor that surfaced over the weekend was claiming. That Sony would be announcing its acquisition of CD Projekt RED in the near future. It seems feasible, right? Sony acquired Bungie after all, a studio responsible for the most popular live-service shooter of the last decade. So clearly it isn’t afraid to put down the cash for such a big purchase.

But Sony is not buying CD Projekt RED, according to the studio and the CEO of its parent company CD Projekt. In an earnings call on May 29, President and CEO Adam Kiciński denied the Sony acquisition. Saying that “CD Projekt is not for sale.”

Sony CD Projekt RED acquisition is “a pure rumor”

An acquisition of CDPR would be a huge gain for Sony. Especially with all of the games that the studio has in the pipeline currently. The upcoming Cyberpunk 2077 expansion coming to PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S, at least three new Witcher games, and a whole lot more.

But Kiciński remains firm that such a sale isn’t actually happening. Noting that the acquisition is a pure rumor and saying the company and its studio want to remain independent. He continues by saying that they have their own path to follow and it’s exciting do so.

Kiciński’s statements should put any rumors about the acquisition to bed. However, it wouldn’t be surprising to see more of the same pop up. As it drives engagement on social media and that seems to be what the leakers are looking for.

Interestingly enough, CD Projekt has echoed the same exact response for years. That the company wants to remain independent and its plans haven’t changed.
