Samsung is rolling out a new update to the Galaxy S23 series. Before you get hopeful, it isn’t the long-rumored major camera update just yet. Instead, the company is pushing a relatively small update in China that brings a more flexible video call experience. More precisely, it lets you seamlessly transfer video calls from your Galaxy S23 phone to a compatible Galaxy tablet.
This update for the Galaxy S23, Galaxy S23+, and Galaxy S23 Ultra in China comes with the firmware build number S9180ZCU1AWD3. The OTA (over-the-air) package for the Ultra model weighs over 360MB, a screenshot shared by Ice Universe on Twitter reveals.
It should be a similar-sized update for the other two models as well. Samsung doesn’t seem to be pushing anything else to the devices, not even a new security patch. The latest Galaxy flagships are still languishing on the February patch in China, which was rolled out last month.
Nonetheless, the ability to transfer video calls could be pretty useful for those invested in the Samsung device ecosystem. As you’d expect, you need both the Galaxy S23 and the Galaxy Tab to be signed in with the same Samsung account and on the same Wi-Fi network to use this feature.
Moreover, the feature may not work with third-party apps such as WhatsApp or Line. Samsung will probably only let you transfer native video calls from your Galaxy S23 to your compatible Galaxy Tab for a bigger picture.
This video call flexibility should reach Galaxy S23 users in other markets
It’s unclear if Samsung plans to roll out this video call flexibility to Galaxy S23 users outside China. Since it’s a pretty big feature, we hope it does. In that case, the June update may bring it. Or maybe the company will push a second May update for its latest flagships in other markets. It has already rolled out an update this month with the latest security patch.
Either way, the next update for the Galaxy S23 series should be a big one. The company is expected to push several new camera features, improvements, and bug fixes. These include a 2x zoom option for portrait shots, improved 2x zoom videos, improved low-light videos, and a fix for the HDR problem that is causing an abnormal halo effect on photos. Stay tuned and we will let you know as soon as Samsung releases a new update for the Galaxy S23 series.
