Google readying big update for Pixel Buds Pro, adds Clear Calling

Google is reportedly readying a major update for the Pixel Buds Pro. It will bring features like Clear Calling, Super Wide Band speech, and more to the TWS earbuds. The last two updates for the pair added Spatial Audio with head tracking, a five-band equalizer, and left/right volume balance.

Clear Calling is a relatively new feature that Google added to the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro in December 2022. It filters out background noise during calls to enhance the audio quality so that the other person can hear you loud and clear even in noisy environments. Background noises aren’t completely isolated, but the feature does bring notable improvement to your call experience.

Pixel phones powered by the Tensor G2 or newer chip support Clear Calling, though the feature doesn’t work for VoIP calls, i.e. calls made through apps like WhatsApp. It’s unclear if the Pixel Buds Pro would get a native solution or if the function will rely on the connected smartphone. If it’s the latter, Google may keep the feature limited to the Pixel 7 and newer devices.

The other new feature that Google is readying for the Pixel Buds Pro also focuses on audio quality improvements. The so-called Super Wide Band speech reportedly enables higher-quality voice transmission, improving the quality of voice calls from 16 kHz to 32 kHz.

It could be an upgrade over the existing HD Voice feature for VoLTE (Voice over LTE) calls. As pointed out by 9to5Google, Super Wide Band speech and Clear Calling may work in tandem to bring audio improvements during calls. Carriers may also need to tweak a few things on their end to make this happen.

The new Pixel Buds Pro update will also bring Digital Wellbeing improvements

The upcoming update for the Pixel Buds Pro will reportedly bring Digital Wellbeing improvements as well. More precisely, Google is working on some hearing-related features. It may let you optimize the sound quality and loudness based on what you are listening to.

Perhaps it could analyze environmental sound levels as well to give you an immersive experience. Unfortunately, details are scarce, so we can’t confirm anything just yet.

The new features for the Pixel Buds Pro are expected to arrive in the coming months but there’s no specific timeline at the moment. It isn’t even clear whether Google will push all of these changes with the same update or whether we will get multiple updates.

Rest assured, the company is giving its premium TWS earbuds regular attention to keep them relevant on the market. We will let you know when these updates roll out.
