Meta fixed a very 'friendly' Facebook bug

Meta has fixed a new, ‘friendly’ Facebook bug that popped up recently. Why ‘friendly’, though? Well, this bug actually sent automatic friend requests to users. Odd? Yes, very much so, and quite possibly very unpleasant.

Meta fixed a rather ‘friendly’ Facebook bug

Needless to say, sending out a friend request to someone you didn’t want to send a friend request to can be very awkward. That is, unfortunately, exactly what this bug did. This bug did not do that on random, however.

Facebook sent automatic friend requests to profiles you visited, presuming you were affected by this bug. Meta did apologize for the error, following the announcement it fixed it. The company said to The Daily Beast: “We fixed a bug related to a recent app update that caused some Facebook friend requests to be sent mistakenly. We’ve stopped this from happening and we apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused”.

This bug cased some awkward moments for people

Imagine opening someone’s profile to block them, and instead of doing that, you end up sending a friend request to that person. Awkward? Yes, very much so. There are way worse examples that we could list, though, of course.

It’s great to hear that Meta fixed this bug quickly, as it was odd enough as it is. If you do want to see it in action, however, a user by the name ‘Bavid Mcjavid’ shared a screen recording via Twitter. It’s shown below.

Facebook is no stranger to odd bugs, we’ve seen quite a few of them over the years. This one is one of the strangest ones, however. It’s both amusing and worrying at the same time, as it can cause a huge headache for users. Let’s hope that the bug is completely gone now, and that it won’t make a comeback at some point down the line.
