Samsung unveils OLED display with embedded heart rate sensor

Samsung has unveiled the world’s first OLED panel with embedded fingerprint and heart rate sensors. Called the Sensor OLED Display, the company showcased it at the SID Display Week 2023. The annual display industry event kicks off today at the Los Angeles Convention Center in California and runs through Thursday, May 26.

Under-display fingerprint scanners in current smartphones either use an ultrasonic or optical sensor. It is a separate module attached under the display panel. These solutions can only detect fingerprints within a designated area, which is typically directly above them. Samsung’s Sensor OLED Display comes with an embedded light-sensing organic photodiode (OPD) to address these limitations and take things up a notch.

Firstly, the new Samsung technology can read fingerprints anywhere on the display. Since the OPD is embedded into the panel itself, it works with as much accuracy in the middle of the screen as in the corners. Moreover, this display can measure your heart rate, blood pressure, and stress level without needing additional hardware. All you need to do is touch the display with two fingers.

According to Samsung, the contraction and relaxation of the blood vessels in our fingers reflect the OLED light differently. Its Sensor OLED Display recognizes these reflections and converts them into health information. Thanks to its ability to simultaneously sense two fingers, this display can measure your blood pressure more accurately than existing wearable devices. That’s because you usually get accurate results when you measure the blood pressure of both arms. In this case, you can use one finger from each hand.

Samsung brought more display solutions to the SID Display Week 2023

The Sensor OLED Display is one of the many display solutions the Korean firm showcased at the SID Display Week 2023. Most notably, it unveiled a rollable panel that can expand more than five times its vertical height. The company also brought display products like Flex In & Out, Flex Hybrid, and Slidable Flex Solo to the event. All of these products were previously showcased at CES 2023 in January.

Samsung’s QD-OLED TV display, which first debuted at CES 2022, won the “Display of the Year” award. The company displayed the 77-inch model at the exhibition this year. Coinciding with the event, the Korean firm has also launched a microsite that lets you check whether your phone has a Samsung-made OLED display. Visit this site and enter your device make and model to check. Samsung will add support for laptops, tablets, and other product categories in the future.
