Sony has announced that it’s currently testing cloud streaming for PS5 games. This is a feature that many PS5 owners have likely wished for and it seems it’s finally coming.
The maker of the PS5 says that it intends to add cloud streaming for PS5 games as an added benefit for PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers. That means if you want to stream PS5 games over the internet, you’ll need to pay for either the monthly, three-month, or annual Premium subscriptions. Which work out to be $18, $50, or $120 respectively.
Even without the PS5 games, the service is a pretty decent value. As you get access to game trials, a large catalog of titles to play without buying them individually and more. With cloud-playable PS5 titles, Sony also could entice more people to upgrade their plan. Sony is keeping most details about the new feature close to the chest. That is, it’s not telling which games you’ll be able to stream. The company isn’t really saying anything other than the fact that testing is underway.
Cloud streaming PS5 games is in the early stages
Before you rush to upgrade your plan, just know that you won’t be able to play PS5 games in the cloud anytime soon. Sony confirms that testing is in the early stages right now. With no word on when it’ll be adding the feature to PlayStation Plus Premium. That means it could land this year and it could be sometime in 2024.
“We can’t wait to share more details when we’re ready, including a launch time frame,” says VP of Global Services and Global Sales and Business Operations at SIE Nick Maguire. With cloud features, players won’t have to download certain PS5 titles. They’ll simply be able to boot the game up through the cloud streaming feature PlayStation Plus Premium and begin playing.
Both PS5 games and game trials will be streamable
Although Sony isn’t saying which games exactly will be playable in the cloud, it does say that both full PS5 games and game trials are part of the testing. “We’re currently testing cloud streaming for supported PS5 games – this includes PS5 titles from the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog and Game Trials, as well as supported digital PS5 titles that players own,” says Maguire.
This suggests that a fairly decent chunk of games for the PS5 will be playable in the cloud once this feature launches. Whenever that happens to be.
