Makarov is the new villain coming in Modern Warfare III

Activision has officially revealed Vladamir Makarov as the new villain coming to Call of Duty in Modern Warfare III. Only, Makarov isn’t really a new villain. At least not in the whole of the Call of Duty franchise. He is however poised to be a “new” Makarov. Not a different Makarov, but by the sounds of it a more devious, hateful, and malignant version of his character from the original Modern Warfare 2 and Modern Warfare 3.

Makarov was teased in the trailer that Activision revealed on August 8. Although the trailer was really just about revealing the game’s title, which is now officially Modern Warfare III. Now Activision has actually confirmed Makarov will be part of the game and its main antagonist in his own reveal trailer released August 9. The bulk of the trailer is mostly live-action shots of Makarov being walked through the prison he’s being held in. But we do get some brief snippets of in-game footage throughout, as well as more audio dialogue from Captain Price. The trailer then ends on a closeup of Makarov’s face after Price says that he’s their next target.

Makarov presents a clear and present danger in Modern Warfare III

Activision certainly isn’t giving everything away just yet. And why would it when the Modern Warfare and Modern Warfare II remakes have had campaigns with such good stories. It’s going to want players to get through the campaign to get the full story. But it has no problem at all dropping breadcrumbs to lead us along the right path. These breadcrumbs are little more than the things Captain Price is saying throughout the Makarov reveal trailer. But they do provide an early look into what we can expect from the character once the game launches on November 10.

Makarov is going to be “a danger that’s clear and present.” Which seems to be painting him as an ongoing obstacle from beginning to end. Even if we don’t deal with him directly from the get-go. Towards the end we also get a quick shot of what appears to be a downed airline. So perhaps this is a shot of the aftermath from the post credits scene in Modern Warfare II’s campaign. Where it’s clear that Makarov’s men hijacked it to some unknown end. Whatever the case, the worldwide reveal for the game is coming on August 17 as part of a special limited-time event in Warzone 2.0. So it won’t be long before players know more.
