Google just launched the Pixel 8, but rumors about the Pixel 9 have already started circulating on the internet. A reliable tipster is claiming that next-gen Pixels will feature bigger screens. The company is said to be equipping the entire lineup with larger displays than their respective predecessors, including the Pixel 9a. The next Pixel Fold will reportedly get a similar upgrade too.
The Pixel 9 series and Pixel Fold 2 to get bigger screens
The speculation about the screen sizes of the 2024 Pixel smartphone stems from Ross Young, the CEO of Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC). Young, who has over 25 years of experience in the display industry, claims that the screens of all Google phones in 2024 will be bigger than the 2023 models. Unfortunately, the X/Twitter post from Young doesn’t give us precise numbers, so we are left to speculate and nothing more.
The newly launched Pixel 8 sports a 6.2-inch display, while the Pixel 8 Pro features a 6.7-inch panel. The Pixel Fold has a 7.6-inch screen on the inside and a 5.8-inch panel on the outside. The new report says Google will increase the display size of the Pixel 9a as well. However, the Pixel 8a is yet to come. It should debut in mid-2024, with the Pixel 9a to follow around the same time in 2025. The Pixel 7a arrived in May this year with a 6.1-inch display.
Interestingly, there has been a rumor a few months back saying that Google is planning to release two versions of the Pixel 9 Pro with two different screen sizes. The company wants to counter Apple’s Pro and Pro Max iPhone models. It remains to be seen which of the two rumors turn out to be accurate. Of course, both may be accurate or wrong too. We will let you know when we have more information.
The smartphone industry may be moving toward bigger devices
Google may not be the only one looking to make bigger phones next year. Apple is said to be considering a similar change as well. It’s looking to equip the iPhone 16 Pro with a 6.3-inch display and the iPhone 16 Pro Max with a 6.9-inch display. That’s up from 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch on this year’s Pro and Pro Max, respectively.
It appears the Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro will get similar increases (about 0.2 inches diagonally). Samsung’s Ultra flagships already sport 6.8-inch screens, so the rumored shifts from Apple and Google suggest the whole smartphone industry is moving toward bigger devices. We are still a year away from the new iPhone and flagship Pixel, though. That’s plenty of time for the two companies to rejig their strategies.
