Qualcomm’s next-gen flagship smartphone chipset is almost here. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 should go official during the company’s Snapdragon Summit in Hawaii later this month. Thanks to leaks and rumors, we already know a great deal about the upcoming chip. A fresh leak states that Qualcomm has emphasized energy efficiency this year, while simultaneously improving the overall performance.
The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 could be highly power efficient
According to X/Twitter tipster Revegnus, Qualcomm has heavily focused on the CPU power efficiency for the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. This was necessary because the new chip has fewer efficiency cores than before. The octa-core chipset will have a 1+3+2+2 CPU configuration, featuring one ARM Cortex-X4 super core, three Cortex-A720 mid-cores at a higher speed, two more Cortex-A720 cores at a lower speed, and twoCortex-A520 efficiency cores.
If you recall, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 has a 1+4+3 CPU configuration, which means three efficiency cores. However, Qualcomm hasn’t let this change increase the power consumption of the new solution. We don’t have figures comparing the two 4nm chips’ power efficiency, but the same source recently reported that the next-gen Snapdragon will be about 30 percent more efficient than Apple’s latest A17 Pro, which is a 3nm chip.
The tipster adds that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 doesn’t bring “a significant change” in the CPU area compared to the previous generation solutions. They also confirm that the Cortex-X4 and the higher-clocked Cortex-A720 cores utilize the maximum available cache size. Moreover, the “For Galaxy” version of the chip, which will be exclusive to Samsung‘s Galaxy S24 series, will feature the same CPU setup too. Like last year, it should have a faster super core.
A benchmark entry previously revealed that the standard version’s Cortex-X4 core will have a peak speed of 3.3GHz. Three Cortex-A720 cores will operate at a maximum frequency of 3.15GHz, while the other two are clocked at 2.96GHz. The two Cortex-A520 efficiency cores have a peak speed of 2.27GHz. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 For Galaxy will bring a slightly faster CPU and GPU, along with other exclusive optimizations from Samsung.
Qualcomm will unveil the new chip in a couple of weeks
The new Qualcomm processor is just two weeks away now. The company’s next Snapdragon Summit in Maui, Hawaii kicks off on October 24. Along with unveiling the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, the chipmaker will also talk about its latest technological advancements in the semiconductor industry and share its future strategies at the event. AI may be one of the hot topics. We will keep you updated with all the latest happenings at Snapdragon Summit 2023.
