Far Cry is getting an extraction shooter focused on multiplayer gameplay, showcasing that Ubisoft is keen to hop on the bandwagon that’s been popularized by games like Escape from Tarkov. Extraction shooters seem to be all the rage these days. With games like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II introducing the CoD version of an extraction shooter in the form of the game’s DMZ mode. Which by the way will be making the jump to Modern Warfare III. The yet unnamed title should release for multiple platforms including PC, PlayStation, and Xbox consoles.
The game is internally referred to as Project Maverick. And will be a standalone title set apart from Far Cry 7. The series next upcoming mainline title. It was however part of Far Cry 7 at one point. But Ubisoft has decided to spin it off into its own game. Technically this is Ubisoft’s first game in this genre. But it’s not Ubisoft’s first time playing with extraction shooter mechanics. Its looter shooter The Division featured a zone that was sort of like an extraction shooter. The ‘Dark Zone’ was an area cordoned off from the rest of New York City. And the only way to get inside of it was to be a certain level to gain access.
You would then deploy into the Dark Zone and could scavenge for loot to extract with.
The Far Cry extraction shooter will take place in a fictional Alaska setting
Little is known about the game beyond a few key details. But that doesn’t mean there’s no information at all. According to Insider Gaming Project Maverick will be set in a fictional Alaska. As the player, you’re “lured” to this region in hopes of finding freedom. But things never stay positive for long in any Far Cry game.
The reality of your new surroundings quickly devolves into madness. And players will be forced to scavenge for resources and supplies. The goal obviously being to survive. In addition to escaping from a particular zone to a safe space. Players will be able to level up their characters while unlocking new perks to make them stronger for the next deployment. The game is reportedly on track for a 2025 release but keep in mind this can always change.
