Minecraft has reached a massive milestone that most games could really only dream of hitting with a total sales of 300 million copies. Technically it has sold more than 300 million copies, but Mojang doesn’t mention the exact numbers beyond that. Nevertheless, Minecraft has proven to be a huge success of a game and it’s come a long way since the early days. Well before it was owned by Microsoft and at a point when the game was still only available as a beta version. Of course part of that success is owed to Microsoft’s purchase of Mojang Studios and placing the game just about everywhere.
And the fact that you can buy Minecraft on consoles, mobile, and PC makes the game more accessible. Which translates to more sales as more people can play it. The milestone reached was announced by Mojang as part of Minecraft Live 2023 event. Where the studio showed off tons of things coming to the game including new DLC, the return of Star Wars, and much more.
Total sales for Minecraft nearly double that of Grand Theft Auto V
When it comes to video game sales, there are a few that come to mind more than any others. One of those being Skyrim, and so much so that it’s become something of a meme to guess which platform it will hit next. The fact is all those different platform releases have contributed to its larger number of sales. But it was nowhere near the level of sales numbers reached by Grand Theft Auto V. Which to date has sold more than 185 million copies worldwide.
An impressive figure to be sure. But one that Minecraft has apparently had no trouble hitting. Granted, Minecraft’s first full release went public in November of 2011. Almost two whole years before Grand Theft Auto V. But that doesn’t take away from how obviously popular Minecraft is. And considering everything you can do in the game now, it’s understandable. Sales were also not the only interesting metric shared by Mojang. The studio says that so far, 15 million skeletons have been slain per day. There have also been 700k cakes made. And the creeper has smiled exactly 0 times since the game’s release all those years ago.
