Samsung's October update lands on Galaxy S23 & more devices

Samsung is pushing its October security patch to more Galaxy devices. The Galaxy S23 series headlines the latest release, but the new security update is also available for the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy A13. It’s a global expansion of the update for the foldable, which received it in the US last week.

The Galaxy S23 series bags Samsung’s October update

The October security update for Galaxy devices patches more than 40 vulnerabilities, including a few critical ones. Samsung started pushing the update to eligible models last week. The US versions of the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5 picked it up first. Since then, the company has rolled out the update for the Galaxy S22, Galaxy S21, and Galaxy A54 in the US, and the Galaxy Z Flip 3 in international markets.

We can now see that the latest Fold model is getting the October SMR (Security Maintenance Release) in Thailand, Turkey, and the UAE. This suggests a global rollout has commenced and it’s just a matter of time before everyone gets the update. The new firmware build number for the phone in these countries is F946BXXS1AWI6. Samsung should soon globally release the new security patch for other models as well.

Meanwhile, the Galaxy S23 series is now joining the part. The October SMR for the flagship trio is available in Europe and India, with other markets to follow soon. The updated build number is S91*BXXS3AWIF in Europe and S91*BXXS3AWIG in India (via SamMobile). Like the rest of the phones, the Galaxy S23, Galaxy S23+, and Galaxy S23 Ultra also aren’t getting any new features or improvements here. Samsung is only pushing the latest security patches.

The latest security patch is also available for the Galaxy A13

Along with flagship models, Samsung also pushes regular security updates to dozens of budget and mid-range devices. The low-cost phones get the updates less frequently, but the company keeps them covered for up to five years after launch. The Galaxy A13, which debuted in March 2022, is now picking up the October update. The new SMR is rolling out widely in Asia, Africa, and Europe with the build number A135FXXS5CWI1.

The update doesn’t bring anything extra, but that was expected. Samsung is preparing to bring Android 14-based One UI 6.0 to eligible Galaxy devices, including the Galaxy A13. It will introduce a host of new features, improvements, and other changes. The rollout is expected to begin later this month for the Galaxy S23 series, with other models to follow over the next few months.
