Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has confirmed in the company’s latest earnings that Threads now has “just under” 100 million monthly active users. Zuckerberg also said Threads has a “good chance” of hitting 1 billion users.
Threads was initially released in early July. Since then, Meta has promoted it on every available platform to increase the user count. While Meta planned on turning Threads into a rival for X (Twitter), users started to lose interest in the platform. A recent report shows Threads’ usage in the United States in September was down 40% from where it was in July.
In days when users are spending less time on the platform, the stats coming out of Meta’s third-quarter earnings call reveal Threads has nearly 100 million monthly active users. The company refused to announce the actual number. Zuckerberg is also thinking about Threads being a “billion-person public conversations app.” The Meta CEO noted the goal is achievable if the team keeps up its work for a few more years.
Mark Zuckerberg hopes Threads could become a billion-person app
Threads was able to hit 100 million users just five days after launch, making it the fastest-growing platform ever. Of course, much of this success was owed to Instagram’s user base. After the initial excitement around the app settled, users started comparing Threads to X and found the app had nothing new to offer. Threads now has over 130 million users, and the app is again gaining more traction in app stores.
Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri also celebrated the new milestone on his Threads profile. He announced the team is working on new updates to improve user experience.
Meta has recently started cross-posting Threads posts to Facebook feed to stoke more interest in the app. However, the move has become controversial since the beginning. Many users say they want their Threads posts to be hidden from Facebook for privacy reasons. Surprisingly, Meta hasn’t yet added an opt-out option. This means there’s no way to keep your Threads posts off Facebook feed.
