Samsung is reportedly planning to launch its LPDDR5T DRAM (dynamic random access memory) chips next year. According to the Korean media, the company shared the details with investors during a meeting earlier this month. The meeting in Hong Kong was attended by several top Samsung executives, including Vice President Ha-Ryong Yoon.
Samsung is working on LPDDR5T DRAM chips
Samsung is one of the biggest names in the semiconductor industry. It makes chips for smartphones, automobiles, and many other products. Not just application processors but the Korean behemoth also makes storage solutions and DRAM chips. It is an industry leader in the latter segments, often being the first to introduce the next generation of DRAM solutions. In October last year, the firm launched the industry’s fastest LPDDR5X DRAM for mobile devices.
However, Samsung’s compatriot HK Hynix and American chip firm Micro Technology recently beat it to the next-gen LPDDR5T DRAM tech. The two companies announced mass production of the industry’s fastest DRAM solution shortly after Qualcomm unveiled the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, which supports the tech. Unsurprisingly, investors popped up the question to Samsung executives about the situation and plans for the future.
The executives said the company has LPDDR5T DRAM chips in the pipeline, with mass production expected sometime next year. The precise timeline isn’t known but Samsung would be looking to bring the next-gen DRAM solutions to the market sooner rather than later. It wouldn’t want its rivals to gain a massive head start and steal potential customers as smartphone vendors look to offer enhanced AI capabilities.
Samsung executives also told investors that the company is working on an upgraded version of LPDDR5X DRAM chips. The upgraded solution will debut next year. The Korean semiconductor giant also plans to release detachable SSDs for automobiles in 2024, with GDDR7 VRAM for GPUs expected the following year (via SamMobile). Samsung will officially announce when it begins mass production of LPDDR5T DRAM chips.
On-device AI capabilities of Galaxy phones were discussed in the meeting
Earlier this month, Samsung announced its generative AI model called Samsung Gauss. It boasts a language, code, and image-generation capabilities. Gauss will power Galaxy AI, the company’s on-device AI tool expected to debut with the Galaxy S24 series early next year. Samsung is rumored to bake Galaxy AI into One UI for seamless on-device AI processing.
Samsung investors were curious to learn more about the project and asked the company executives about it during the said meeting at the Conrad Hotel in Hong Kong. The firm may have divulged some information but details are scarce. Rumors say the Galaxy S24 series will go official on January 17, with general sales beginning on January 30.
