The Galaxy S24 camera can use AI to fill in photo backgrounds

The Galaxy S24 series comes with tons of upgraded camera goodies, including a quite surprisingly large set of AI editing and generative AI tools to make the most of your photos. It’s the age of AI and what started as a spearheaded campaign by Google to bring AI into the forefront with smartphones, is being pushed forward by Samsung, the Android manufacturer with the most market share. Samsung officially announced the Galaxy S24, Galaxy S24+, and Galaxy S24 Ultra on January 17. Each has its own unique traits, but across the board, they’ll all have some form of AI magic baked in.

This is perhaps most prominently displayed in the cameras. Where users will have access to a suite of features that will let them “transform image capturing abilities” Samsung says. Take for instance a generative AI feature that will automatically fill in the backgrounds of photos. This will fill in “parts” of the image background to make the image seem a little more busy. It can also fill in the corners of an image if the image ends up crooked.

These features also come with some caveats. Samsung says that using the Generative Edit feature requires a connection to the internet and users need to be logged in with their Samsung account.

What’s more, the resulting images are stamped with a visible watermark. This is so that it’s possible to discern that the image was partially created with AI. Still, it should be a neat trick to get some interesting photos if you feel like the ones you took came out a little boring.

The Galaxy S24 series with generative AI for photos will let you “unleash creativity”

Being creative with your pictures is half the fun of taking them. And thanks to the generative AI features in the Galaxy S24 series devices, you’ll have more creativity than ever before. The idea is to give the user more control over their image editing for a more customized end result. Of course, you can still relinquish some of that control. The Galaxy S24 series will feature AI editing suggestions that can adjust the image for you. These are meant to be “perfectly suitable tweaks for each photo” the company says.

Users can also make simple edits themselves with the Galaxy AI editing tools. You’ve seen some of these before in the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro. And Samsung has been teasing them for weeks. Is something in the image too big or in the wrong spot? Shrink it down and move it to the right spot. You can also completely remove objects. No longer will you need to deal with those strangers who meander into the background of your photos, ruining the perfect shot in the process. Setting up these edits is as simple as can be too. All you will need to do is circle the object that you’re trying to edit.

It’s even possible to slow videos down with the AI-powered ‘Instant Slow-mo’ feature. This will generate more frames than were captured using the movements in the recording. And you end up with a video that’s been slowed down while retaining a smooth visual appearance. The feature is likely to produce some interesting results although it seems this is more intended for fast-paced action recordings.

Everything is powered by the ‘ProVisual Engine’

The secret behind the sauce is the new ProVisual Engine Samsung has incorporated into these devices. This is a “comprehensive suite of AI tools” that are designed to help the user maximize creative freedom with their smartphone photography. Samsung says these tools are implemented at every step of the photo process. Including setting up the shot and even sharing the final image on your favorite social platforms after all the work is done.

These are just the first set of AI features to come to Samsung’s phone cameras. But with seven years of updates, users can probably expect there to be more in due time. You’ll be able to pre-order the Galaxy S24, Galaxy S24+, and Galaxy S24 Ultra starting today.
