Helldivers II units sold are rumored to have surpassed 5 million which is an astounding accomplishment considering how little time the game has been out. The game has been an explosion of success this past month since it launched on February 8. It’s been so popular across both PS5 and PC that developers Arrowhead Game Studios have had to constantly increase the server cap to keep up with players trying to log in. Anything over the initial cap had been causing crashes and other issues. Players kept on buying the game due to word of mouth from friends and influencers.
If you’re unfamiliar with the game, Helldivers II is a third-person shooter that has you play the role of a soldier in the Super Earth Army. Think less super soldier and more run-of-the-mill grunt. Kind of like Starship Troopers. Your duty is to spread managed democracy. That includes but isn’t limited to destroying legions and legions of bugs and super-advanced robots. Who’s only goal is to snuff out human life. It’s strictly co-op PvE unlike other shooters such as Call of Duty, and friendly fire is always active. This makes for a lot of chaotic comedy and is a big reason the game has been doing so well. It’s just generally fun to play.
The exact amount of Helldivers II units sold hasn’t been confirmed
There aren’t any confirmed hard numbers for the sales figures. But there are some details that point to the general number to go off of. Back on February 24 Helldivers II Creative Director and Arrowhead CEO Johan Pilestedt gave a hint on how well the game was doing. Pilestedt was initially keeping the communication lines open (something that he’s been doing very consistently) about server cap increases. He was letting players know that the server CCU (the concurrent user numbers) was likely to hit the max capacity of 800,000 soon.
One of the comments asked about sales numbers, with a comment from another user stating “I bet almost 3 million.” Pilestedt responded to this with a simple emoji combo that suggested the actual number was higher. Now it seems to be way more than 5 million according to industry insider Shinobi602. Over on the forum Resetera on March 8 (via Wccftech), Shinobi responded to another user saying that Helldivers II “could definitely be at 5 million sold by now.” Noting that it was “way more than that” as of that time.
Now there are still no hard numbers on how many copies of the game have been sold. But it’s selling well and is continuing to do so. Just in the UK alone, it saw increased sales numbers for three weeks in a row according to Gameindustry.biz’s Christopher Dring. And that’s just from UK-based data. In short, the game is a smash hit and will probably continue to be one.
