Google introduced its latest Pixel smartphones called the Pixel 9, 9 Pro, 9 Pro XL, and 9 Pro Fold earlier this week. Apart from the refreshed design and upgraded hardware, the new Pixels are also loaded with a handful of new AI features. The search engine giant has also introduced an all-new Pixel Weather app for the new phones, which offers an AI weather summary.
Notably, Google isn’t keeping the Pixel Weather app exclusive to the Pixel 9 as it is coming to the Pixel Tablet soon.
Pixel Tablet will soon be getting the AI-powered Pixel Weather app
Google has updated a support article on its website, which explains the new Pixel Weather app. The new article mentions that the new app is available for the Pixel 9 series, including the Pixel 9 Pro Fold and Pixel Tablet. The latest weather app will be available on the Pixel 9 series smartphones at launch. Soon, Google will release the Pixel Weather app for the Pixel Tablet as well.
The new goodies of the Pixel Weather app could find their way to the Pixel 8 and older products soon. 9to5Google reports that it’s likely most of the features, except Gemini Nano-powered AI Weather Report, will be available for older Pixels. The new weather features are expected to arrive in the December Pixel Feature Drop update.
The new functionalities could be added to the Weather app that powers the Google Clock integration. It is available on the Pixel 5a and newer. Notably, you can also sideload the app on non-Pixel phones. Recently, we were able to install it onto the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 foldable flagship.
The Pixel Weather app offers a custom AI weather report, 10-day forecast, weather map, and more
Google’s new Pixel Weather app offers a handful of useful features. You get a customizable detail page, notifications, and the weather summary. It provides information like a 10-day forecast, AQI, humidity levels, and a map to see a 6-hour precipitation forecast.
The biggest highlight of the app is an “AI Weather Report”, which is powered by the Gemini Nano model. The app lets you get a grid of Material You shapes for various things. In these cards, you can include Precipitation, Wind, Sunrise, & sunset, UV index, Visibility, Pressure, and more details.
There’s also a useful Weather Map, which provides a 6-hour precipitation forecast. It is powered by the “same models supporting nowcasting”. This feature will be available in the US, UK, and most EU countries, excluding Italy, Luxembourg and Lichtenstein.
