Google‘s upcoming Pixel Weather was leaked earlier this week, and now it looks like more information has been made available about what it will offer. Spotted by 9To5Google, you can actually install the weather app on your Pixel by sideloading it. It requires at least Android 14. You can also sideload the app on non-Pixel phones, as we were able to successfully sideload it onto the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6.
While this isn’t the first we’ve seen of the new Pixel Weather app, there are some new details popping up. For instance, the app will be able to send you notifications when it’s about to rain. In the settings, you can enable a toggle that will allow “precipitation notifications” so you can be made aware of when rain or snow will arrive soon. Interestingly enough though, this menu wasn’t visible on the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 for us, but it is there on the Pixel 8.
Pixel Weather will send you notifications for weather forecasts
Another newly discovered feature is the notifications for weather forecasts. You can find this toggle inside the weather settings menu along with the precipitation notifications. Enabling it allows nightly notifications for weather forecasts for your current location.
So if you like to stay up to date on what the weather is going to be like the following day, this will set you up and you won’t have to manually go search for that information. You can also sign into your Google account to sync the data across devices. That is if you want to install the app on multiple phones or tablets.
You aren’t required to sign in. However, the syncing does pose useful benefits if you have more than one device that you actively use.
The app is getting AI summaries and a weather map
In addition to the notifications for precipitation and the weather forecast, Pixel Weather is also due to get AI summaries and a weather map. There isn’t much information on this yet. It also doesn’t appear to be in the app version that’s available to sideload. However, Dylan Roussel on X mentions that these two features are coming. Suggesting that they’re both worth getting excited about.
You can download the app from APKMirror (via Kamila Wojciechowska) to sideload it onto your own device. It will also reportedly be available with the launch of the Pixel 9 series phones.
