How OPPO squeezed 50W wireless charging into the Find N5 using a paper-thin charging coil

One of the many upgrades on the OPPO Find N5 this year is the addition of wireless charging. It was missing on the Find N3 (and previous foldable devices from OPPO), and it’s great to see it on the Find N5. However, given how thin this device is, just how was OPPO able to fit in the charging coil for the wireless charging functionality?

Well, after the launch event on Thursday, we had a chance to talk with Zhenyu Wu, who is the product manager for the OPPO Find Series. As well as Leo Meng who is a tech specialist at OPPO. When talking about wireless charging with the Find N5, Meng mentioned that in order to fit wireless charging into a device so thin, OPPO needed to use a thinner charging coil. The charging coil inside the Find N5 is about 0.18mm thin.

In the demo area at the event, OPPO did show us an exploded look at the Find N5, which is shown above. And you can see just how thin that wireless charging coil is. It’s pretty incredible considering it does support 50W AirVOOC wireless charging.

OPPO is also not supporting Qi2, yet

Like OnePlus, OPPO is also opting not to include Qi2 support with the Find N5. The company believes that its 50W wireless charging is better than what Qi2 can provide – which is a max of 25W. However, the other aspect of Qi2 is supported here, with a case. And that is MagSafe. OPPO introduced a number of magnetic accessories with the Find X8 series, and that is continuing with the Find N5. You will need to get a magnetic case to use these accessories with the Find N5. Or you can attach a MagSafe magnet to the back of your phone. But a case is a better option.

OPPO does sell a magnetic case for the Find N5, which I absolutely love. This case has an incredible finish, that makes it feel luxurious, which is crazy to say about a case, but it is true. It’s sort of a mix between vegan leather and carbon fiber. That’s about the best way I can describe it.
