Summary: Google’s new Sources button is now available in Gemini. Instead of a scrolling list of sources, Gemini will now have a button you can tap to get a list of the sources used in its response. This is available in the latest Google app.
These days, fewer and fewer people are going to Google for searching and research. More and more people are heading to AI chatbots for these things, including yours truly. Usually because it’s faster and easier to get the info you’re looking for. However, one of the issues with that is the websites that create the content that has these answers to your questions lose out on that traffic and income. Google has a plan to sort of combat that, which is to provide a button to show all of the sources from the response.
A couple of weeks ago, Android Authorityfound this change in the APK teardown of the Google App. Now, it appears that the feature is available in the latest version of the Google App, v16.14.39. Instead of having a side-scrolling list of sources at the bottom, there is now a Sources button that you can tap on, which will open an overlay with all of the sources listed that you can then visit if you need more information.
This is very similar to how ChatGPT shows sources now, though ChatGPT does have a separate tab for images versus links. Google’s implementation doesn’t look as polished as what ChatGPT has, but that might change as Google continues to make minor tweaks to the Sources button.
Publishers have a real problem with AI
Publishers like yours truly have to combat the rise of AI chatbots, as they steal our content and also steal our traffic. Many people looking for something specific don’t even need to go to other websites. Chatbots like Gemini, ChatGPT, Claude and others, all provide what is needed without sending any traffic to the publisher. Which is a real problem that the whole industry is going to have to deal with.
