HONOR was expected to announce the Magic V4 this year, a direct successor to its Magic V3 foldable. That may not happen, however. It’s not what you think, though. The phone is still coming, but under a different name.
The HONOR Magic V4 may not launch at all, the Magic V5 coming instead
According to Fixed Focus Digital, a tipster, HONOR plans to ditch the Magic V4 name, and launch the phone under the Magic V5 moniker this year. Why is that? Well, it’s because of a tetraphobia.
You may wonder that is, which is understandable. It’s a practice of avoiding instances of the digit 4. This is due to a superstition most common in East Asian countries. For example, OnePlus skipped the OnePlus 4 and jumped straight to OnePlus 5. Other companies did not do that, like Xiaomi, for example.
HONOR did not have such issues in the past, so…
What’s interesting is that HONOR didn’t do it either thus far. The HONOR Magic4 series, for example, launched, HONOR opted not to skip anything. That also makes us doubt this report, in all honesty.
HONOR did not skip the number ‘4’ thus far when it comes to is products, so we’re not entirely sure it will this time around. The Magic V4 rumors were around for quite some time, and this is the first time we’re hearing about this.
Either way, the HONOR Magic V3 was announced in July last year, in China. It has seen its global launch in September 2024, at IFA in Berlin. Some rumors suggest that the phone may launch even sooner this year, at least in China. It remains to be seen if there’s any truth to that.
The HONOR Magic V3 was the thinnest book-style foldable until the OPPO Find N5 arrived. It remains to be seen if it will claim back that crown with the Magic V4/V5.
