Aside from the initial Android 1.0 and 1.1 releases, Android 1.5 Cupcake is the first major new iteration of Android, first upgrade if you will. This version of Android was released on April 27, 2009. Android 1.5 Cupcake has a rather long changelog and Google did its best to improve upon every aspect of Android here, so let's check out what's new. Android 1.5 Cupcake brings support for third-party virtual keyboards with text prediction and user dictionary for custom words, which is a big deal of course. You now have the choice of which keyboard you'd like to use and I don't doubt we'll see plenty of them introduced out there so you'll have tons of options. Google also brings support for Widgets on the table, widgets are basically small application views which are embedded in other applications, like the home screen, for example, and receive period updates. Video recording and playback in MPEG-4 and 3GP formats is now supported by the OS as well.
Auto-pairing and stereo support for Bluetooth (A2DP and AVRCP profiles) have also been added by Google. Copy and paste features in the web browser is here which will come handy to each and every one of you I believe. User pictures are now shown for Favorites in Contacts. Specific date / time stamp is now shown for events in the call log along with one-touch access to a contact card from call log event. Animated screen transitions will spice up your usage experience of the OS in Android 1.5 Cupcake and screen auto-rotation has also been introduced in this update. You also have the ability to upload video to YouTube and the ability to upload photos to Picasa directly from the system, these options are now baked into Android.

Android 1.5 Cupcake brings tons of improvements to Android. Just take a look at the long list in the "information" section and everything will be perfectly clear. I don't even know where to start here, support for third-party keyboard and the addition of widgets is a huge, huge thing. You spend a lot of time using your keyboard and it is important that it suits your style and usage scenarios and widgets will bring you information fast and efficient on your homescreen, wherever you decide to place it or them, depending on how many you have of course. Screen auto-rotation will come in handy for sure as well, depending on what you do on your phone you'd want it to be rotated in a certain way, and so on… there are simply to many features here to talk about all of them separately, but Android 1.5 Cupcake is definitely a huge step forward for Google and Android, no matter which way you look at it.
